What does completing 26.2 miles mean?

Different people have different feeling for running 26.2miles or 42.195km.

I couldnt recall where did i put the rest of my finisher medals for marathon. Where did i keep NYC finisher medal? Hmm...i know...i threw it inside the shoe accessories bag.

Today(Monday) as i walk along the streets, i realised how much the finisher medal means to some runners. I have come across at least 20 runners from different nationalities( None i believe is from US) are wearing the medals and walking around - shopping!

To wear a finisher medal a day after the event doesn't make sense to me. To the ones that wear the medal and proudly walk/wheel around it matter alot to them. The trainings, committements and joy of finishing 26.2 Miles(first time or not) is sometime normaly people don't do it. It is an achievement that some can only dream of doing - crazy lah running 26.2miles.

Compare to those folks, i am guilty that i take it lightly. It is tough, it is painful at times, it is something that you just bite the bullets and push on irreguardless of the conditions and just finish the distance on whatever it takes.

Well. Let look forward to the new Marathon.

I guess in the Western country, completing a marathon or for that matter any super feat is considered an achievement and something to be proud of. Look at the way the whole community turn out to support. People who complete these events are considered as heros.

Back here, most ordinary folks who do not share the passion will call these people 'siow'. Again, look at the level of support along the routes and you will know the difference.

In time to come, perhaps Singaporean will learn to appreciate this.
