Singapore Bay Run - 2007
Singapore Bay Run - SAFRA Sheares Bridge Run & Army Half Marathon
Date: Sunday, 26 August 2007
Start Point: Esplanande Drive
End Point: Marina Promenade(NDP Floating Platform)
Time: 5:30am
Distance: 21km
The annual Sheares Bridge Run is here again. This is my fourth attempt since 2004. I did 12km on first attempt at 2004. Subsequently is the longer distance. The last 2 attempts i treat it as a benchmark to gauge my fitness level. This year is no different, but with some hesitation.
Timing is just not right. First, i signed up Aviva 70.3 on 2nd Sept. Next come the news that Sheares Bridge run is 1 week prior to that on 26th Aug. I ought to be tapering for Aviva 70.3, i struggle to convince myself not to sign up for it, but failed. Subsequently i couldn't stop myself for taking part in Desaru Long Triathlon on 18th Aug, which is 1 week early than Sheares Bridge run.
By right i shouldn't be taking part 3 events in a row. It is too much. Somehow i convince myself that i only live once. If i don't seize the opportunity, i might not get an opportunity anymore. Life is never a bed of roses, i just have to grip the thorns whatever are shove in front of me.
I have to admit, i am harbouring the aim to do sub 2 hours for this event. It has always been my target to go under 2 hours for 21km. After achieving 1:57 hr in Desaru event, i believe i can do sub 2 hours in SBR, given the fact i am doing only 21km run this time round. I also have to be realistic that i had completed an event that took 6hr+ the week before, even though i took it on a casual note, it did take alot out of myself.
The usual ache, muscle tightness and knee "sng" after Desaru, indicates the damage is as great as doing 42km event. If i push during SBR, what kind of damage will i sustain? Will i get injure? How much do i have left for Aviva 70.3? It is a no win situation for me.
I have to switch to knee length CWX for this run as right knee is slowing sign of injury. Hopefully the additional protection will be good.
From the organiser there is going to be a group of pacer for this event. Hmm...what i intend to do is to stick to the 2hr pacer and see how far i can go. If body show signs of unwell, will slow down or walk if necessary. This run isn't worth it, given the priority on hand.
I stayed about 30 meters from the start line when the event was flagged off at 5:30am. I started off at a pace which i feel is suitable -slightly faster than LSD. Pretty soon, i can start to feel my right knee showing signs of weakness. Sigh...
Seems like ages before i reach 5km mark, time check 28mins. Still on target, but can tehan for how long given current situation?
Finally start to catch sight of the pacer. At current pace, i catch up with 2:30hr pacer! KNS, what kind of pacer is that? They are running faster than their intended pace!
I overtake some 2:15 hr pacer around 10km mark. Time check 56mins.
Put on the MP3 around 12km. Time to put some motivation when the body is weaken. Not use to running at this effort. It was hard compare to last week. Is it the body fatigue due to last week?
15km, time check 1:24hr. Still on course. Just need to continue the pace i should be able to complete within 2hr.
I am tired. Have to slow down especially on Nicoll Highway on the slight incline. I couldn't believe that this is happening! The right knee is causing discomfort, calves are getting tight. It was bad. Quite a number of folks are starting to overtake me. I must be slowing down alot.
As i get nearer to Esplanande floating platform, time indicates i am still well within 2 hrs target which is good. I decide to take it easy and cruise back. Unless mishap, i should able to do sub 2 hrs. Target achieve just need to minimise any more damage and look towards next week Aviva 70.3
It was a nice last 1km as the pressure is off and i able to soak into the atmosphere.
Caught up with Mohan during the last 500 meters and have a chat with him. We ran side by side to the end. I have been wanting to do this for a long time with my Indian friend. Finally get a chance to do it. Cool.

Finally i manage to clock Sub 2 hrs for 21km. A PB, from previous year of 2:11 hr. It is good that i have manage to achieve my target, but i am not elated. I am more concern at what price i have paid to achieve this?
Timing just not right.
P/S: I left immediately after the race. Don't feel like interacting with anyone. I do not know why. I just feel that i need a place to rest.

Wah sez, 3 consecutive races in 3 weeks. You really solid Ironman. I salute you. All the best in the Aviva HIM.
Well done!!!
But like you say, don't over-stretch....stretch is OK......
PB is always a good feeling.....
But you need to rest sufficient for the next one......so slow down, & take care............
